    PROJECT UPDATES

Parramatta City Council: Business Planning for Artists Studios, & Proposals for a new Gallery for Parramatta

Positive Solutions assisted City Council with business planning for the establishment of customised artists studios, responding to a need identified during the Federal Government's Myer Inquiry into the Visual Arts and Crafts. In order to act quickly, Council committed to renting a suitable building in the centre of Parramatta, and to undertaking a range of adaptations. In September the new studios opened. Subsequently, we were asked to assist with preparation of a submission to the NSW State Government for support towards the costs of establishing a Gallery in Parramatta. This would form part of the substantial Civic Place development adjacent to Parramatta rail station. This 3 hectare development will include Council administration facilities and the New Generation Centre - a combined facility incorporating library, gallery, heritage centre and independent cinema.

    The Meteor, Hamilton, New Zealand
Following Positive Solutions' initial feasibility study in 2005 into the adaptation of this former bottling plant (and former car showroom, and former skating rink), Hamilton City Council has determined to proceed with enhancement of the building as a performance venue and creative industries incubator. meteor_image_-_antanas_procuta_small.jpg

    Cairns Performing Arts Centre
In 2002 Positive Solutions undertook a study for Cairns City Council examining the options for replacement of the current Cairns Civic Theatre which, at over 30 years old, was the first of Queensland's modern regional theatres. City Council subsequently purchased land to accommodate a new performing arts centre. Positive Solutions is now working with Cox Rayner Architects to examine the feasibility of co-locating a new Museum for Cairns with the performing arts centre, prior to City Council proceeding to the next stage of development.

    City of Greater Bendigo

    View Street, Bendigo
Positive Solutions assisted the City of Greater Bendigo with determining the most appropriate location for development of a new Theatre for Bendigo. Having confirmed as preferred location, the View Street area, adjacent to the current Capital Theatre and City Gallery, we are now assisting City Council with preparation of a masterplan.

    Toga - Darwin City Waterfront
In 2005, Positive Solutions prepared a Cultural Plan for the Darwin City Waterfront on behalf of the NT Government and their private sector partners in the initiative.  Our involvement continues through appointment as Cultural Consultants to the Toga Group to oversee the implementation of the vision and strategies endorsed in the Plan.  This will be managed through Toga's Waterfront Office and the appointment of Felicity Green as Public Art Manager to the Development.  Through her previous role as Director of Top End Arts Marketing, Felicity managed the very successful TogArt exhibition in July this year held at Parliament House.  A new annual contemporary art award will continue to be a component of the cultural plan.

    TRAINING & FACILITATION
Training sessions and facilitation of strategic planning have been undertaken in the past few months for Arts North West (NSW), ICE (Sydney), the boards of Redlands Museum, Redcliffe Hospital Foundation, the Brisbane Development Association and the Brisbane Ethnic and Multicultural Arts Council. Board development programs have also been run on behalf of the Australia Business Arts Foundation in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart.

    THE OFFICE

Three new members of the Positive Solutions team!
We are delighted to welcome Sue Silberberg and Sarah Greenwood. Sue joins us as an Associate Consultant, based in Melbourne. Her immediate previous role was Director of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games Cultural Program. Sue has substantial experience working in Government (including Arts Victoria and Parks Victoria) and in the museums sector. Sarah is a local Brisbane artist interested in public art, space, and architecture, and joins our Brisbane office as Administration and Research Assistant - freeing up Nikki Moodie to move into the new role of Communications Coordinator.

We would also like to welcome Syliva Langford, who joins us as a Consultant.  Currently on a career break from the Northern Territory Government, Syliva has most recently acted as the Chief Executive of the NT Department of Local Government, Housing and Sport.
