Research, Policy and Cultural Planning

Our research projects have ranged from Federal or State industry mapping, to research commissioned to inform an individual organisation’s strategic planning.    In each case we devise the research processes and tools in close consultation with the client. These may include depth interviews, postal or telephone surveys, focus groups or other mechanisms.  Whatever the technique, client feedback is sought to ensure that key issues and questions are addressed effectively.  We work to ensure that our analysis is focused on the practical use of the results – to inform policy, to assist with decision-making, or to enhance industry knowledge.

We have led the development of numerous local cultural plans, and cultural facilities plans; and drafted public art plans and other sector-specific frameworks and guidelines.   Sensitivity to local cultural contexts is a keynote of our approach.

Projects have included:

  • Cultural planning, incorporating a strategy for public art for the redevelopment of the Darwin City Waterfront

  • A review of the subsidised dance sector in Australia, a review of Theatre for Young People, and a review of signature festivals in Queensland – each including recommendations on strengthening the sectors in the future

  • An analysis of the needs of Indigenous Art Centres in Far North Queensland and the Torres Strait commissioned by Arts Queensland and QIAMEA.  The report identified best practice models for the success and sustainability of industry in the region and has led to significant investment in the centres for the future

  • Research for the Public Galleries Association of Victoria (PGAV), providing operational and financial benchmarks for public galleries in Victoria.
